ANCHOR:You won\'t find anything like it, at least not anywhere in the South Pacific. The National Tattoo Museum in New Zealand\'s capital holds tattoo artifacts from all around the world.Tattoo artist Steve Maddock helps us to unravel the unique history of this art form. Our Correspondents in New Zealand Give you the story...STORY:\"Every country and culture has a tattoo history and only about twenty percent of them are very well recorded.\"\"They\'re digging people up and finding tattoos on them that goes back thousands of years.\"Steve\'s covered in tattoos. He built his first tattoo machine at 14. And 20 years on Steve has shown no signs of stopping here. He\'s even built a museum.Unique to his museum is the artifacts of the spiritual culture of New Zealand\'s indigenous people, the Maoris.[Steve Maddock, Museum Director]:\"Here\'s what a Maori used for doing the moko. As youcan see the teeth on that baby is made to pierce the skin, and a good whack with the stick will put it in there.\"Traditionally the moko signified status among the Maori and to them it is very sacred. Their family lineage was often etched into their tattoos.[Wilko Onken, German Student]:\"I think the moko is a very special and magnificent kind of tattoo and it has great meaning- the Maori Tattoos.\"Ideally you have to be a maori to be able to carry a real Moko. However British pop star Robbie Williams has a Western version, which is then called a Kirituhi.Soccer super star David Beckham was almost destined for Steve\'s chair last year, but rough play on the field ended with a broken riband a cancelled appointment. This is Gina Shakespear NTD New Zealand ancient, aritfacts, art, maddock, museum, new, ntd, steve, tattoo, zealand
